We become the terrorists if we are willing to use torture. It's awful, as it is, that prisoners aren't even given due process. What if your son or daughter was one of those picked up for being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Thank you for your work,

Marfa Levine

We can judge every issue that comes up by one criterion: Is it right? Is torture as a matter of course right? No - it's NOT.

Torture by our government is un-american. Kidnapping in order to torture is also un-american. Arresting and hiding people without notice is un-american. What part of un-constitutional does the President/Vice-President/Republican Party understand???

It is ironic that George Bush defends in invasion, and war with Iraq, as advancing democracy, while the very model he uses as a yard stick is crumbling.

It is the responsibility of all who love freedom and democracy to stop this insanity that has taken hold of the White house, and irnoically again by someone who "claims" to be a Cristian.

The 1st step is to stop he rubber stamp bill allowing the continued torture of human beings by our country men and women, and then to examine how we allowed this situation to snowball into one of the most shameful governements in a post-industrial country.

Americans cannot support torture for any reason, for to do so is to become that which we oppose. As soon as we compromise our most basic values, we have lost this war. I want to see terrorists brought to justice, but not at the expense of justice as a means to a just end. If we truly wish to see the world free of the violence terrorists bring, we must ensure that we will always be distinguished from them in the compassion we show all people.

Uphold international standards for treatment of detainees. If we do not treat this people like there people then what is to stop them from attacking us. You can only push someone around for so long before they strike history has showed us that. Besides that are they not of flesh an blood just like us. We are all the same an if it was you in there place you would not want to be tortured. You would not want your human rights to be taken all because of your relagion or the color of your skin. If you were in there place though an you had been detained an tortured, but not only but your family too would you want to hate America would you want to kill us.

Thank you for your time,

Jon Wood

Bush is also torturing us. He is destroying our country, what worse torture is there. He has destroyed our reputation, our economy, our solidarity with our own countrymen and is killing our children for profit. Our country has been turned into a political country instead of a united country. What ever happened to the thinking of what is best for our country NOT what is best for the party..the country used to come first not the party!!!!!!! We must take back our country, the bush regime has hurt us enough!!!!

Where in the hell is your conscience. Are you sentient? Are you human?

To everyone who will be reading this, I am completely opposed to torture. It's animalistic and unjust. There are other ways to get the detainees to give out the information that is needed to find the ring leaders in the crowd. It's very upsetting to me to know that this type of a protocol is used. It has to stop and it has to stop right now.

what i want to know is why anyone is letting president bush get away with everything. president clinton is impeached for an affair. who cares. president bush is a criminal of the worst kind and is destroying america. he didn't win the election, he stole the election. with tons of help from alot of people. criminals just like him. when is this nonsense going to end. if they believe in torture, then how dare they judge the terrorists for torturing people. maybe someone should torture president bush to learn all the atrocities he's committed, and all the people that lie for him.

Torture of detainees is unacceptable, and puts our soldiers at risk.

It sickens me that our country has stooped so low. Stop torture of powerless prisoners now!

What a sad commentary on our moral fiber when we condone torture in any shape or form.

To Whom It May Concern:

I knew a great man. His name was William Franklin Johnson. He was a great man because he risked his life for his belief that this was a good country with good people running it. Frank stormed Omaha Beach in one of the first waves and, unlike ALL of his friends, he survived. He was forced to play dead while a German patrol combed the beach bayonetting any survivors. A German soldier kicked him in the ribs, breaking two of them, but Frank did not utter a sound.

Ironically, Frank finished out his military service after the D-Day invasion by serving as a guard in an American run POW camp for German soldiers. He ended up having absolute power over the same sort of men who broke his ribs and laughed about it, but he never laid a hand to them. Frank earned the respect of both his military peers and betters, as well as that of the German men he guarded, through his honorable conduct during this assignment. This is how Americans should conduct themselves.

The horrors of Abu Ghraib are no less horrible to me than the very idea that we should entertain retroactively removing anything from the Geneva Convention. It frightens me that there are ANY Americans who believe that torture is a good idea, let alone the fact there are "educated" Americans arguing for the retroactive rescripting of the Geneva Convention to make what was once illegal, immoral and completely wrong, somehow O.K. Torturing prisoners is wrong. William Franklin Johnson knew that. So did most of his generation. I know it, too and I want to make certain that my representatives in both houses in Washington D.C. know it as well. Torture is wrong. Stop any measures that fail to uphold the Supreme Court decision that provides for fair trials and internationally recognized standards for care and treatment of people in detention. Since the last sentence is written in doublespeak, I will expect that my Senators and Congrssional Representatives will understand it without difficulty. I thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Mark S. Cookman

Our government now has made human rights abuses and torture legal, and our government is conducting torture in other countries. We have lost all respect worldwide for a long time to come.

We must uphold basic human rights and preserve the dignity of detainees and prisoners of war. No matter the violation, humans have basic rights that must not be violated.

It is almost incomprehensible that Americans in both houses of our government are willing to support torture and avoid the rules of the Geneva Convention. Please make it clear that you are not doing this in MY NAME! I thought I was raised in a great country that could be an example to all others. Your failure to support the Constitution and the Geneva Convention make me ashamed of you and my country's leaders. Please do the RIGHT THING! Apparently, you have not! You will all have to apologize to the world, to your children, America's children and all others. If you asked a child if what you have done is right, fair and good. They would be apalled. They're tough on bad things. Apparently much tougher than you. I shudder to think what they would say to each and every one of you. Perhaps your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will someday question you and condemn you for the choices you have made. If not, surely, when you cross over to the other side; you will be made to stand and answer for your misdeeds. I would hate to be you!!!Andrea Buenzli

These bills will destroy our country faster than any terrorist action. The terrorists applaud your efforts, for you do their work for them starting with the PATRIOT Act.

Torture is ALWAYS wrong, no matter who is torturing, no matter who is being tortured. It is wrong and immoral. Who would Jesus torture?
