Oppose General Hayden For CIA Director

We learned with Watergate, then Irangate, that government denials of illegal covert activity cannot be trusted. In both those cases, the truth ultimately showed that the illegalities were broader and more serious than originally alleged.

Trust the government? Experience shows that only vigilance and truth-seeking will protect our rights as citizens.

It is being widely reported that the NSA has in fact been monitoring virtually every domestic phone call in the US. In doing so they had gone out of their way to escape the scrutiny of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court, which the Bush administration has already declared in public it would flagrantly disregard. And yet they are now pushing General Michael V. Hayden, the prime overseer of this vast domestic spying program, to take over the already demoralized CIA as well.

When challenged on this recently General Hayden proclaimed, "Believe me, if there is any amendment to the Constitution that employees of the National Security Agency are familiar with, it's the 4th," after having just denied that there was any reference to the expression "probable cause" in there to regulate unreasonable searches and seizures.

Even Republican leaders have admitted this warrantless spying program is "clearly and categorically wrong." And it is just as wrong to allow a military takeover of a civilian intelligence agency. I urge you to stop the "wrong wing" takeover of our entire government.

Thank-you,

Rodney Smith

This spying on us has to stop! It is clearly against the constitution. What kind of president do we have that would put someone in charge who would violate our rights and spy on us in such a violation of our rights? No to Hayden and Bush!

Surveillance without a warrant is unAmerican. We are drifting towards Fascism/militarism call it what you may. We aren't drifting--our country and its hard won democracy is being methodically taken from us by extremeists. The whole world is endangered by this. Wake up America and act vigorously, intelligently, vigilantly to defend our Constitution and the rights of all people not just the superwealthy and religious fringe groups! We are falling hard and fast. Pretty soon it will be too late.

I want my privacy. Secure borders, check containers, but leave good tax paying citizens alone.

Thank you

The Director should be someone with the correct type of experience, but it should also be someone with no ties to Bush or his cronies!

I think this is one of the biggest cover-ups in american history. The Bush Administration needs to start thinking about the real problems going on here in america first before we went off to war and jumped head first into a problem we didnt know how to solve.I just wish they would bring our troop's home.I have family going to iraq and im sarced but most off all i mad because thier sending these little kids out thier to fight thier war for them.We are paying for a war that has no end,and were paying with are young men who just want to defend thier counrty but they end up getting the worst end of the deal.George W. Bush should most certainly get impeached and maybe even getting fedaral charges brought apon him for lying to the nation .So god bless the world and our troop's every ,amen.

As a major player in approving wiretapping he is not a good person for this position.

Say no to Hayden. We're headed in the wrong direction and the voters are trying to turn things around. Those elected to REPRESENT us need to start doing their jobs better. Making sure that Hayden is not given this position is a GREAT place to start!

Spying on US citizens illegally is just that -- illegal. Supporting torture, lying to the US public, "outing" a CIA agent, screening average citizens -- does not promote safety and certainly does not . The President, his cabinet, congress, should all be bound by our constitution and laws --not just the public.
In the words of Dwight Eisenhower, "we seek peace, knowing that peace is the climate of freedom."

Nothing less than prison for bush, rove, cheney, rumsfeld, colin powell and his son, rice, gonzalez, alito, ralph reed, bill frist, sensenbrenner, pat robinson, etc, and all those that support the illegal presidency and administration, for murder, war crimes, treason, constitutional crimes, racketeering, etc, you name it they've done it. The facts and evidence are crystal clear, the lies as big as hitler's, in fact, they are using his formula to commit the worse crimes in American history using the people and our government. Prison for the lot, a few thousand people belong in and I can live with a million or so that are in prison out. They are not the threat to society, bush and his criminal cronies are. We can't wait any longer. Michael Mayer

Spying on US citizens is unacceptable. Confirming the appointment of someone who justifies such practices (aka Michael Hayden for CIA) is also unacceptable. When will Congress stand up for the Constitution and the American people? WHEN?

Benjamin Franklin said that those who give up their rights and freedom in exchange for safety deserve neither! Truer words were never spoken...any excuse to trample the Constitution means we really have NO Constitution, and Bush has violated his presidential oath when he swore to uphold the Consitution!!!

Our representatives ( and I use that term loosely) are turning our democracy over to the Military and the dictatorship of Bush and Cheney. Before we have no freedoms left, we need to impeach both Cheney and Bush, get rid of the representatives who even contemplate putting General Hayden over the CIA. I cannot believe that this is happening to our country---what are we waiting for a Military coup and then the loss of all our freedoms before we wake up and demand that our representatives represent US???????

It has now been widely reported that the NSA has in fact been monitoring virtually every domestic phone call in the US, and they're even spying on reporters. Its almost starting to be like the old show The Prisonier. Are we americans not allowed to talk to our friends and family without everything we say being listened too.

Since both of you have already voted for Gen. Haydon I write this as a note of my disappointment in your actions and to tell you that your actions have now virtually assured us that Tennessee will elect a Democrat this fall to fill the seat of Sen. Frist.... The conformation of Hayden is the last straw and will probably cause the GOP to lose control of the Senate and maybe even the House.... Through investigations of the wiretap scandal, the Abramhoff scandal, the phone call scandal, and alll the other scandals is the only way to turn this around and get the voters back!!!!! Of course if these alligations are true they won't be back, and they shouldn't!!!! The lack of leadership in the House and Senate has allowed this situation to develop!!!!! Almost 60% of the American public thinks the GOP legislative leadership is wrong!!!! Over 60% thinks the executive branch is wrong!!!!!

The appointment of a military man as the head of a civilian intelligence agency is just business as usual for the Bush-Cheney duo that was placed in office by the supreme court. It suits their purposes, not the American citizen's to have the person who was responsible for domestic wiretapping made head of the CIA. Because you have allowed Bush and Cheney to totally ruin the country for the normal citizen and their children and grandchildren I will ask everyone I'm acquainted with to vote for NO ONE presently in office.

My wife and I were horrified when we received a letter from "Webster Orthopedic Medical Group" of Oakland, Ca containing the name, birth date, social security number, phone number, occupation, address and other personal information of another individual who lives a good 130 miles from us in Antioch, Ca. After going to the mail box and getting the mail, my wife started opening the various letters etc. It became apparent, as she looked over the contents of a one letter, they were not intended to be received and or read by her. She discovered the address on the envelope was ours but the name on the address was that of someone we had never heard of. I became very disturbed after she informed me about the letter and have been worried all weekend about the safeguarding of my information since I am also a patient at the same clinic.
With all this talk about Identity theft how can our government expect us to continue to participate in a system which allows this to happen to its valued working citizens, and who does very little about it. It's bad enough just trying to find a job which has access to medical insurance, and practically impossible to find affordable insurance. Now we have to risk having our identities stolen because of the irresponsible handling of our information by individuals who apparently are faced with no real consequences for their mishandling of patients identifiable information. It seems to me and many others that our law makers and enforcement branch should either provide a fail safe method for the handling of our information or be accountable for all the adverse affects which result from identity theft. After all the victims didn't set up the current system and if given a choice would never participate in any activity which would in any way or shape jeopardize their financial status or credit rating. Our governments' failure to establish real safeguards and more importantly substantial consequences for any failure to follow such regulations regardless of whether accidentally or intentionally is deeply disturbing. I am contacting the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) because I don't know where else to turn since I am unable to locate any organizations or agencies on the internet which claim to represent or enforce any rules or regulations established to protect medical patients from the mishandling of their information.
We need to find an organization, agency or someone who has not yet cowered down to the current government bureaucracy who will really do something about this situation. I will continue to pursue a satisfactory outcome regarding this matter and intend to solicit the help of an attorney or someone with equal or greater capabilities who will work with dedication and tenacity to establish reliable and enforceable regulations to protect us.
As our representatives and lawmakers please protect us and do something about this.
Thank You
copies of this letter have been sent to Lou Dobbs,4 on your side, the Oakland tribune, and the Federal Trade Commision

Please vote against the nomination of General Michael V. Hayden as Director of the CIA. General Hayden was chief overseer of the NSA spying program, which I feel was illegal, unwarranted, and improperly carried out.
