How can we even think of doing more off-shore drilling after this disaster? We need to put our resources and energy into clean fuel alternatives. Any fossil fuel companies need to be highly regulated to ensure protection of the public and the environment. Safety measures need to be top priority.

THE ONLY DRILLING ALLOWED SHOULD BE FOR RELIEF WELLS PERIOD.

Let's get smarter about everything shall we? Stop letting the corporations dictate public policy or there won't be any public left! Stop the drilling and start on a new energy policy NOW!

The earth cannot afford to take the risk of any offshore drilling, the present catastrophe should prove to anyone, that
if we want to leave this world intact we need to sacrifice some
things today so our children may have a life worth living tomorrow. Don't put your blinders on. Take action from your heart and do what is right. I don't know if we will reccover from this disaster, but let's make sure that it doesn't happen again, EVER.

I feel the current BP oil leak crisis is proof positive that more drilling, especially in vulnerable habitats like the artic, is absolutely not acceptable.

We cannot drill our way out of our dilemma. We must work toward restructuring our societies using methods other than off-shore drilling.

Until there are more safety devices required and unbiased inspections We need to stop and fix the problems and make also available repair vehicles to be on site or less than 1 hour away all offshore drilling needs to be inspected and all new drilling stopped!

We cannot drill our way out of our dilemma. We must work toward re-structuring our societies to have a richer way of life using 90% less energy. We must do it to survive.

Not only are fisherman suffering a loss of income, now Shell is announcing that stopping offshore drilling will cost 50,000 jobs in the Houston area. While cuts backs at NASA will put hundreds maybe thousands out of work. What the heck, why is Houston targeted for all this? I voted for you, it like having Geo. Bush back again and he was a certified dummy.

I know there are some in Congress who'll go back to chanting "Drill Baby, Drill!" just as soon as they can. This behavior requires incredible greed and/or unstoppable denial, as it has now become so obvious what harm our energy policy has done, and will continue to do. Whom does it benefit? FOR SHAME!

This gulf oil disaster is more than just a sign to stop this crazy oil economy, it's a slap in the head. Stop this madness.now

Untill we get the means to stop an oil spill as soon as it happens we dont need to be drilling anywhere offshore

In the 60s and 70s environmental biologists were warning about the consequences of pollution and urging alternative energy sources replace fossil fuels. Then we had the Arab oil embargo of 1973 but no one paid attention because we have a horrible electoral system that permits companies to support candidates. All elections need to have candidate debate on the TV and in newspapers. No more silly commercials that are for the shallow minded. And no more two party system. The ghost of Thomas Jefferson must be looking on in horror as the "artificial aristocracy" rules the U.S. The motto of our electorate is "follow the money, let business reign unfettered". And now we have the gulf disaster. How would Gulf Coast people vote if given the chance to choose "back-up well" of "no back-up well?'

Alternative energy technologies also create jobs which this country really needs. Democrats have promised us a GREEN JOBS PROGRAM for years.
Now is the time!

We need to create incentives for people to conserve on the use of fossil fuels. Just Creating major bicycle highways that cross towns would create opportunities for people to get healthy exercise as well as reduce the number of cars on the road that contribute to traffic and pollution. Tax breaks for businesses that hire locally and for people who use alternative means of transportation would help. Competitions across the country inviting people to come up with solutions for their communities would be a way of tapping into the imagination, ingenuity and civic spirit that people are yearning to express.

Why do so many people try to make live so hare for others? If you smoke you pollute the air, cause cancer to others around you and yourself, cause other diseases too, and the darn stuf stinks.

Dear Elected Official,
Let's do the right thing and go full speed ahead with research and development of renewable energy. Also, tell the oil bastards "No thanks, we are Americans and we will figure out how to kick our addiction to your filthy products." If you don't get "on board" with this we will elect somebody who will.

Do the RIGHT thing now! You know the right thing is to get off oil.

We need to find greener alternatives, that will not damage our planet going in, and coming out of our cars. We need to end our addiction to oil, and being bought out by corporate greed. It takes initiative, brains, and strenth. All of which have been signifigantly sparse in this country. Cinch up America, lets roll our sleeves up and get smart with the alternative renewable power.

I hate to say "I told you so." Many of us have been sounding a warning call on off-shore drilling.

Our leaders are responsible for their actions, and the fruit of their actions. Oil has dominated this country for too long. When will you learn to think Green????

Anyone that thinks that we can keep on with our addiction to oil obviously isn't paying attention. We will run out eventually. Plus we aren't leaving a great place for future inhabitants. Come on...we're smarter then this and their are alternatives popping up all the time....let's move on from our addiction to oil.

the drilling and air pollution must be replaced by sane, renewable energy sources. this is not optional, it is mandatory. if i were your president you would either agree to cease your bi-partisan lobbying, your forsaking of the american people and their dreams in favor of special interest groups such as big oil, big pharma, wall st. big banks, big ins. etc. you would stop your self-centered catering to cronies and contract sweethearts or be standing in an unemployment line in whatever state you formerly represented because you would no longer be allowed on capital hill. by whatever means necessary, i would get MY job done, either with you or without you. sincerely, san

Offshore oil drilling can lead to dire consequences to the environment and local economies. The western US coast should be protected from this risk. We must end our addiction to petrofuels.

Our new planet (christened "Eaarth" by Bill McKibben) is already working out to be far more hazardous than the one we lived on for thousands of years.

For only one example: Warmer air holds more moisture than cooler air, and when it does cool down, titanic deluges are the result. This is not some futuristic nightmare scenario, it is already happening, from this winter's deluges in New England and along the Atlantic seaboard to this week's foot-deep hailstorm in the Front Range of the Rockies. We've just been warned to watch for an especially active hurricane season. What more need I say?

We MUST take every measure possible, as soon as possible, to minimize even further climate change.
