that so much thought went into the morality of the 'war crimes act' how can we allow this president to null and void it by replacing it with 'his torture program.' he can't get away with it anymore!

I am absolutely opposed to the changes proposed by the President to the War Crimes Act. Our laws must be obeyed BY ALL as they stand. We citizens are looking to Congress to stand firm on this issue!

As a member of the Green Party and canidate for Congress I may be limited in campaigning by a heart attack, but still determined to see Mr. Bush and Mr. Chaney punished for their crimes.

The U.S. reputation for torturing "detainees" is so bad we can't do anything to make it worse.

The America I believe in does not engage in torture, does not hold people in detention without trial, respects due process and affirms human rights for all.

Please stop the abuses of the Bush Administration. Neither our troops nor the Central Intelligence Agency should be engaging in torture, rape or murder at the behest of anyone, especially not our President. This is not what the United States of America represents. In fact, this is exactly why this nation initiated and held the Nuremberg Trials to establish the fact that soldiers must have a conscience and a sense of right and wrong and cannot just arbitrarily follow orders that are a crime against their fellow human beings. All soldiers have a solemn duty to say no when an unlawful or murderous order is given and we the citizens of the world must stand behind them for having the courage to refuse an order which is actually a crime against humanity.

The CIA has devolved into a group of people no longer upholding the standards of the United States of America - Peace, Justice and Liberty for all. It has become the pawn of men interested in lining their own pockets at the expense of not only the lives of our young men and women but also the lives of the young men and women of Iraq.

Why do we continue to let this administration justify any illegal action by appealing to our fear of "terror"?

What good does it do to protect our country from terrorists if we violate the civil protections, Liberties, and privacy of not only our citizens when doing so but of the entire world? A president is not a king, nor is he God. He is subject to laws just like anyone else and should not act alone except in the direst of emergencies and time constraints. This president is disrespecting the Constitution and by doing so is disrespecting the people!

This President and Congress, in their arrogance are trying to invalidate the ultimate sacrifice made by our service people. This Administration and Congress cannot be allowed to continue breaking the law. As any other criminal they must be sent to trial to be judged by a jury of their peers - the American Taxpayer.

If this should continue I foresee a Coup de etat'. This is the United States of America and in classses year(s) ago it was in Smauel T. Dash 's book on Eavesdropping or today is it considered Air Piracy? as Robert Johling stated," Forensic Science when used for personal gain is illegal." However, many thing(s) during a wartime must occur and those Law(s) are outstanding in the treatment of Prisoner(s) of War in the Geneva Convention. As for the CIA or Central Intelligence Agency those matter(s) and law(s) are found in the National Security Act. Section two clearly is the birth of the Central Intelligence Agency. I all respect this is the only place for the law(s) to be constructed for any future.

The Geneva Convention was just before even though not long before the National Security Act. Therefore, I do not understand what is being attempted? Re-writing what work(s) will not work.

If I were to place a world map on top of my United States map would I be surprised? NO! year(s) ago I did that. Try it America and stand up for America and Yourselves.

This has not bred just since President Bush. He cannot be the fall guy for it all. There has to be other's taking some of those responsibilities that have placed the middle class family in almost a double jeapordy.

when growing up my minister stated once that Christians walk around with a smile on their faces and make everyone wonder why they are smiling. Good ethic(s) and never to hurt anyone is to smile and greet people instead of saying oh no here they come. Treat people as you wish to be treated and the world will be healthier.

I say NO to this Torture Bill and McCains Torture Compromise. As well as JAG being coherced into signing this letter. JAG does not have to do anything JAG does not want to do in behalf of the American Armed Forces. I do not agree that this will benefit our US Troop and I believe that JAG is most aware as well as the consequence(s).

Communism or Socialism will not be on my itenerary for 2007. If I am forced to negotiate it in my life in 2007 there will be price(s) to pay.

GOD BLESS AMERICA! Ann Brison

The war crimes act protects innocents in a time of war. Why would we want to stop that?

It's time for George W. Bush to feel the outrage of the
American People who with open eyes have seen the EVIL policies of this EVIL man transend into a collection of failures
from A to Z which shames all of America!!!

Sincerely,

I understand that all Republicans in Congress, and many Democrats as well, have voted to successfully pass this heinous War Crimes and Torture Bill. Shame on all of you who did so! I understand that some Democrats may have done this as part of a deal not to be too prosecutorial of Shrubbie should the Dems regain control of one or more Houses of Congress in November. I can accept that, as long as this horrifying legislation is reversed as soon as possible afterwards.

Somebody in charge somewhere better start using some reason in their actions or you might be finding THIS country in Civil War...

I can't believe my country has stooped this low, torture is not what we are supposed to be about. Bush only wants to save his ass from going to jail. Would you want to be thrown into jail just because you weren't born in the USA and who knows if that is the only people who will be sent away? Could it be you to?

Intelligence gained from torture is not good intelligence. It is not viable that what we learn is true, nor is it ethical. I thought you guys were supposed to be following in Jesus's footsteps. Do you think He would be proud?

If there was an Olympic event for hypocritical lying, the Bush administration would have no peer anywhere. But perhaps the biggest honking lie of all is that the torture of our detainees has given us any intelligence to make us safer. Indeed, it was information extracted by torture (of Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi) that was used as an EXCUSE by the Bush and Cheney that it was so drop dead critical to attack and occupy Iraq, now recognized by all with an honest bone left in their body as the greatest strategic blunder in our nation's military history. It is all contained in the Phase 2 Senate Intelligence Committee Report, which Cheney claims not to have read himself.

Those who really know interrogation know that information extracted by such means is BAD intelligence, notwithstanding the most extreme "ticking time bomb" scenario the Bush regime constantly throws in our faces. But just as they have systematically done in every other policy area without exception, those who actually know what they are talking about have here again been muscled out of government decision making. We are told for example that the military JAG attorneys were held for hours in a meeting and not allowed to leave until they signed on to the president's demands.

And now Bush directly threatens the American people by saying if they will not rubberstamp his torture program as is, he will scuttle it. That's exactly akin to a bank robber threatening to stop robbing banks unless we change the laws to his specifications. Of course it has to stop. When we have a program that is so destructive to our REAL national security it absolutely MUST stop. Maybe then, just maybe, we could get back to obtaining good intelligence of actual value. But Bush in his patented flim-flam way would make it sound like his critics would have us stop all intelligence operations to protect our families.

The America I know and love does not support torture. We must lead the world to honesy and care for all people. Punish yes, torture NO.

By our actions over the past five years, we are forfeiting our place as a world leader by invading a sovereign country, engaging in torture to gain information(which has proven to provide what interrogators want to hear rather than the truth), and have removed from responsible positions, those who were most qualified to advise our top officials of the most effective way to win the hearts and minds of others and simultaneously fight terrorism and gather intelligence in an effective and logical way. The United States is losing its credibility as a world leader, and this greatly saddens me. I so wish we had the America back that made those of us in the rank and file roud to be Americans.

The War Crimes Acr of 1996 was enacted for a reason, and that reason was specifically to prevent or punish exactly the sort of behavior now being displayed openly by the Bush Administration. Bush claims that he will terminate the CIA torture/rendition program if the War Crimes Act is not revised to his specifications. Let's take him up on it!!

Leave The Geneva Conventions alone. The War Crimes Act is fine the way it is. No amnesty for crimes committed by this administration. Follw the laws that are on the books.

Do not change the war crimes act! If the President violates it, he should be charged with impeachment.

Bush's tactics have reached the bizarre, with Congress in tow. I'm 52, haven't protested in 20 years, but this president and his illegal manuevers are enough to make me get up and go fight for this country's constitution.

I suggest you atone for past mistakes and start walking a righteous path--no matter what your belief or religion. Let's turn the corner in this country and PROSECUTE THE BIGGEST CRIMINAL IN THE LAND--GEORGE BUSH!!!

I believe showing basic human respect to even terribly misguided people is the best (maybe ONLY) way to long-term peace.
